Fast Commercial Water Cleanup in Wilmington Helps Keep Bowling Alley Open
A water spill incident at a Wilmington bowling alley threatened to bring down a community center with a rich history. SERVPRO managed to control the situation and helped it reopen in due time because of the fast action we took after learning about the incident.
The situation seemed like any other straightforward commercial water cleanup case in Wilmington because it did not involve black or grey water that usually requires elaborate decontamination procedures. However, some unique properties of the facility made the otherwise straightforward process of water extraction and cleanup more difficult. Our SERVPRO technicians had to rely on the preparation we had done before arriving at the loss site and improvise along the way.
The main challenge to the cleanup was the wood lanes since overexposure to water or expedited drying could cause imperfections in the wood, thus ruining the experience for bowlers. Wet-vacuuming the floors helped remove the surface water from the floors and bowling lanes. We also used other cleaning procedures such as mild agitation of the floor surfaces and detergents to remove soils and other residues left by the standing water. Setting up drying chambers over the wooden lanes helped manage the drying process, quickening results, and preventing adverse outcomes such as warping or swelling.
Safety was another issue while working to restore the alley because the lanes were extremely slippery when wet. Our SERVPRO technicians use rubber boots, which have a better grip over slippery surfaces compared to other types of footwear. We also plan the loss sites before starting work to ensure cables and hoses that can trip anyone visiting the loss site are moved out of the way. Therefore, we managed to clean the area with no incident.
